about

Life Re-Assembled

In this tumultuous year we have had our lives up-ended. As a musician, I lost most of my
teaching, performing, rehearsing, recording opportunities. I decided to use this time to write
music for an “accappella” horn group. The instruments I heard in my head were 3 woodwinds,
a trombone who doubles on bass or tuba, a trumpet and drums. Well I just play the saxophone so in these arrangements I use saxophone choirs of 2 – 10 saxophones. Due to Covid 19, all
parts were recorded at each musician’s home and then assembled and mixed at my home
studio. I think you will find that the music breaths like we are all playing together at once.

Due to isolation, we have all been reaching out to old friends near and far. Realizing that I can
send and receive audio files via email, this album also became a way for me to connect
with friends old and new here in Western North Carolina and in Japan. It was wonderful to work with the various artists who contributed to this music!

Musically I wanted to write songs that use simple, direct harmony/ song structures. I have always enjoyed vocal groups like “Zap Mama” and horn ensembles like Steve Turre’s “Sanctified Shells” or Lester Bowie’s “Brass Fantasy”. The emotional content in this album gives voice to some of the things that I am upset about in society, but I also wrote several songs encouraging people to recognize the good things in our community and just the joy of spring erupting, despite Covid 19 and other hardships.
